TASL’s Sportsmanship Program: A Model for Maintaining Integrity and Quality in Sports

For over 20 years, the Tucson Adult Soccer League (TASL) has built a reputation for exemplary sportsmanship without the need for external advertising.

This achievement is largely due to their rigorous and effective Sportsmanship Program, which not only promotes fair play but also enforces it with a structured points system.

Here’s an in-depth look at how this innovative program works and why it has been so successful.

How It Works: The Points System

At the heart of TASL’s Sportsmanship Program is a straightforward points system where each team starts the season with a perfect score of 10 points, reflecting their commitment to sportsmanship.

Referees are essential in this system, monitoring and rating team behavior during games and using a detailed table to deduct points for infractions.

Points deductions are recorded directly on the game rosters, ensuring real-time tracking and transparency.

This method keeps all teams informed of their current standing and upholds the league’s standards.

  • Failing to clean up the team sideline: -1 point
  • Failing to assist with field setup/takedown (if required): -1 point
  • Showing disrespect toward opponents or officials: -1 point
  • Receiving verbal warnings: -1 point
  • Directly challenging the referee’s authority: -2 points
  • Having a spectator dismissed: -2 points
  • Receiving yellow cards: -2 points per occurrence
  • Receiving red cards: -4 points per occurrence

Rewards and Penalties

The goal is for teams to maintain an average of at least 8 points throughout the season, ensuring adherence to high standards of behavior and sportsmanship.

Teams that score 10 points or more receive incentives such as pizza parties, free t-shirts, and registration discounts.

Conversely, teams falling below the 8-point average face penalties, including the risk of losing their spot in the league for the following season.

Repeated poor sportsmanship may result in a permanent ban from the league.

A Testament to Success

TASL’s Sportsmanship Program has effectively maintained the league’s integrity and quality for over two decades, thriving without the need for advertising.

Its success demonstrates how the structured points system fosters a positive, respectful environment, setting a high standard for other leagues and ensuring the league’s ongoing prosperity.
